Sunny
Sunny only settles at night if his blanket is folded at the foot of the bed, exactly the way his mom does it. The first evening I stayed with him he watched me fold it, sighed, and went straight to sleep.
Pet stories
Every animal has their own way of being. These are a few of the friends I've cared for — and what made each of them themselves.

Willa hides from most visitors. By the third drop-in she was waiting on her window blanket at the same time every afternoon, because that is when we sit together and she decides whether today is a chin-scratch day.

Maybach meets me at the fence before I am out of the truck. He is particular about the order of things: grain first, then water, then a few minutes of standing quietly together before I get on with the rest of the chores.
Care changes everything.
